Eligible for Benefits

Ogden City's Fire Department and the Human Resources Division conducts testing annually to establish an eligibility list. This list is used by the Fire Chief to hire from during the year that it is valid.

The candidate must meet the following requirements in order for their application to be approved and be invited to the testing process.

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record

  • Must have a Utah Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) Certification or above.  AEMT is preferred.
  • Must have the following fire related certifications that are issued by the Utah Fire Service Certification System or if issued by another state's system, bear the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) seal:      
    • Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness Level      
    • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations Level      
    • Firefighter 1      
    • Firefighter 2

The testing process for the entry level firefighter position involves these areas of rating:

  1. A written test will be administered. The National Fire Select Test (NFST) FPSI's National Fire Select Test (NFST) job related written test used to measure candidates' ability to effectively work with the public and other members of their department in addition to reading comprehension, writing ability, mechanical aptitudes, map reading, mathematical reasoning, and various human relations skills. 
  2. An oral board that rates on the centers of:     

              Previous field experience of EMT and Firefighting     

             Skill application from Firefighting and/or EMT     

             Advanced training in Firefighting and/or EMT

Physical Ability Testing. This test is pass/fail and we currently use a gym test which consists of:

One Bench Press of 70% of the applicant's body weight

Sit and reach assessment

Vertical Leap with a minimum of 16 inches

Push-ups with as many as possible. Minimum of 20.

Metabolic Equivalent Test (METS) with a minimum of 9.2 METS

Sit-ups with as many as possible in one minute.  Minimum of 25.

Grip strength with a minimum of 40 kg of force
