POSITION SUMMARY

To perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and related service activities related to streets, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, traffic, and utility maintenance. Receives general supervision from the Supervisor or Crew Leader.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING STANDARDS

Three years' experience performing field maintenance including pipe repair and installation. Sanitary sewer system experience preferred. Training equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Utah CDL, class A with a tanker endorsement within 90 days of hiring. Possession of, or ability to obtain a Wastewater 3 certification within two years. Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid Utah flaggers certification within 1 year.

 

NIMS REQUIRED TRAINING

Employee will be required to complete NIMS IS100, IS200, IS700, and IS800 within six months of hire.

 

Failure to obtain the license and certificate as outlined above will result in termination from the position.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Operate construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as dump trucks, front-end loader, backhoe, vactor, flush truck, compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws, sewer rodders, mowers, edgers and blowers; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
    • Know and understand underground utility locating procedures and "blue stake" policies and procedures including coding, marking of utilities.
    • Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
    • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
    • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
    • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
    • Perform snow removal and ice control duties as required.
    • Be available for emergency calls after normal working hours.
    • Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
    • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employee is required to use on-site equipment.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and as assigned by the supervisor or by the Crew Leader Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of sewer mains, manholes, lift stations, pumps, storm drains, and detention basins.
  • Assist in pipe laying and pipeline repairs.
  • Assist in tapping main lines.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, skills, abilities:

  • Must be able to operate and maintain various machinery, small tools and vehicles assigned.
  • Work assignments are usually technical in nature and the employee is expected to be pro-active and conscientious in work habits.
  • Work assignments may include labor type work including working with construction, paving or landscaping material, work associated with laying, repairing and maintaining pipelines and associated system components, working with Scada, Microsoft and Granit XP, and other electronic and computer associated equipment, and locating of Sewer lines storm drains and manholes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general operational characteristics of Sewer mains and laterals.
  • Employees will receive a variety of work assignments and may be requested to assist other crews or work units as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Employees are expected to be largely aware of and be able to apply general construction operating practices and procedures in their daily assignments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of pertinent City and Division policies, procedures, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safe work practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Basic arithmetic principles.
  • Ability to learn to read a variety of sewer plats, and as-built drawings.

 

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Generate and maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Deal tactfully with the public.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Work in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Walk for extended time periods.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include: walking or standing for extended periods of time; operating assigned equipment etc.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations, communicating with others, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles as required by the position.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
  • Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations, including safety and risk management standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Travel from site to site, exposure to dust and noise. May work at heights or in deep trenches. Work in inclement weather conditions. Heavy lifting, standing, and climbing.

MOTOR VEHICLE REPORT

Driving record of successful applicant will be obtained by the HR office.

Successful applicant must submit a copy of above education requirements when requested.

 

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS

Applicants MUST submit a copy of their DD-214 to the Human Resource office during the interview process. This is for initial appointments only.

 

SALARY RANGE

Range 33 - $1,315.38 to $1,797.43 (Bi-weekly Rate) (DOQ). Typically hire at minimum. This position is eligible for benefits.
