POSITION SUMMARY

To assist in performing semi-skilled and unskilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and related service activities related to street, traffic, and utility maintenance. Receive direct supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Crew Leader.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING STANDARDS

Two years of construction and maintenance experience performing field maintenance work within the assigned area of responsibility. Experience with maintenance equipment and power tools; i.e. dump trucks, front-end loaders and backhoes. Experience with the following equipment is also preferred but not mandatory: flush truck, compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, sand-blaster, concrete saws, rollers, crack sealer, tar pots, movers, edger's and blowers, stump grinders, brush chipper, and hi-ranger. Training equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid, Class A Utah CDL driver's license.

 

NIMS REQUIRED TRAINING

Employee will be required to complete NIMS IS100, IS200, IS700, and IS800 within six months of hire.

 

Failure to obtain/maintain license and certificate as outlined above will result in termination from the position.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Promote and follow the City's mission statement, values and expectations
  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as dump trucks, front-end loader, and backhoe, flush truck, compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws, rollers, crack sealer, tar pots, mowers, edger's and blowers, stump grinders, brush chipper, hi-ranger.
  • Maintain hand tools and assigned equipment; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Some experience in concrete finishing.
  • Some carpenter experience.
  • Properly locate and dig graves.
  • Backfill/finish burials with all related interment disinterment functions.
  • Minor tune-up repair of small engine equipment.
  • Install street barricades, signs and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities.
  • Direct and control traffic around work sites and maintain a current flagging certification.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provide information within the area of assignment.
  • Resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Respond to all emergencies, snow removal and ice control duties as required.
  • Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.      
  • Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employee is required to use on-site equipment.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, skills, abilities:

  • Methods and techniques general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned.
  • Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Grade staking
  • Cutting torch and welding
  • Small engine equipment tune-up /light repair.

 

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Learn to perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area assigned.
  • Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks, for extended periods of time, in unfavorable conditions.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations, communicating with others, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles as required by the position.

  • Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Travel from site to site. Exposure to dust and noise. Heavy lifting, standing, and climbing. May work at heights or in deep trenches. Work in inclement weather conditions. Walking and standing for extended periods of time.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS

Applicants MUST submit a copy of their DD-214 to the Human Resource office during the interview process. This is for initial appointments only.

 

SALARY RANGE

Range 30 - $1,221.46 to $1,669.09 (Bi-weekly Rate) (DOQ). This position is eligible for benefits.
