POSITION SUMMARY

To assist in performing semi-skilled and unskilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and related service activities related to street, sewer/storm, traffic, and utility maintenance. Receives direct supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Crew Leader.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING STANDARDS

One year of general maintenance experience performing field maintenance work. Training equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid, Class A Utah CDL driver's license with tanker endorsement within three months of hire. Possession of, or ability to obtain a wastewater certification within one year. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Utah flaggers certification within one year.

 

NIMS REQUIRED TRAINING

Employee will be required to complete NIMS IS100 and IS700 within six months of hire.

 

Failure to obtain/maintain the license and certificate as outlined above will result in termination from the position.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Promote and follow the City's mission statement, values and expectations
  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as dump trucks, front-end loader, and backhoe, vactor, flush truck, compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws, sewer rodders, mowers, edgers and blowers.
  • Maintain hand tools and assigned equipment; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities.
  • Direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Inspect and clear obstructions from storm drains, sewer lines, gutters and culverts, assist in repair on sewer mains, manholes; tap sewer mains.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provide information within the area of assignment.
  • Resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Perform snow removal and ice control duties as required.
  • Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.      
  • Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours and after when on call; and employee is required to use on-site equipment.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
  • May assist with the cleaning and repair of water meters.
  • Take stand-by status as assigned.

  • Learn to perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area assigned.
  • Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks, for extended periods of time, in unfavorable conditions.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

    • Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations, including safety and risk management standards
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include, walking and standing for extended periods of time, and operating assigned equipment.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations, communicating with others, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles as required by the position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Travel from site to site, exposure to dust and noise. Must be available to work 15 hours at a time when needed. Heavy lifting, standing, climbing, may work at heights or in deep trenches. Work in inclement weather conditions.

Driving record of successful applicant will be obtained by the HR office.

Successful applicant must submit a copy of above education requirements when requested.

 

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS

Applicants MUST submit a copy of their DD-214 to the Human Resource office during the interview process. This is for initial appointments only.

 

SALARY RANGE

Range 27 - $1,134.25 to $1,549.92 (Bi-weekly Rate) (DOQ). Typically hire at minimum. This position is eligible for benefits.
