Experience and Training Guidelines: One year of general maintenance experience performing field maintenance work within the assigned area of responsibility; training equivalent to the twelfth grade, Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Utah CDL, Class A within 60 days.   Failure to obtain the license as outlined above will result in termination from the position.

Physical Requirements: Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities; working conditions involve travel from site to site; lifting, stooping; exposure to dust and noise; heavy lifting, standing, climbing; may work at heights or in deep trenches; work in inclement weather conditions.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned.
  • Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Learn to perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  • Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Perform heavy manual labor; work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations, including safety and risk management standards.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include walking or standing for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations, communicating with others, operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.

Essential Functions: Operation of various maintenance machines and equipment, be able to operate computer with software that includes Sportsman, Cartagraph, and Excel & Word processing. Be able to run a cash register and balance the till as needed. Must have excellent customer service skills. Receive direct supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Crew Leader.

    • Promote and follow the City's mission statement, values and expectations
    • Operation of Refuse Trucks, Large Screens, Flushers, Grinders & loaders as needed.
    • Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as Refuse trucks, Street sweepers, Salt/sand spreader, Snow plows, Dump trucks, Front-end loader, backhoe, Bob Cat & attachments, Flush truck, Chain Saws, Compressors, Log splitter, Grinders, Mowers, Weed eaters, Edgers, Blowers & Bag making.
    • Maintain hand tools and assigned equipment.
    • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
    • Must have knowledge of city streets & city boundaries
    • Direct and control traffic around work sites.
    • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
    • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner.
    • Provide information within the area of assignment.
    • Resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
    • Knowledge of composting practices and procedures.
    • When assigned to the Streets, Solid Waste, or Sewer sections of the Operations Division - work on projects in any of these sections when assigned.
    • Be available to work 6 days a week including Saturdays and work 15 hours at a time when needed; be available for recall at any hour for snow/ice control operation or other contingency operations.
    • Must have ability to follow detailed collection route maps.
    • Be willing to apply pesticides and herbicides as required.
    • Shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base in patching, repairing and reconstructing streets, weed control.
    • Detention basin maintenance; inspect and clear obstructions from storm drains, sewer lines, gutters and culverts; assist in repair of sewer mains, man holes; tap sewer mains.
    • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employee is required to use on-site equipment.

Marginal Functions:

  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Motor Vehicle Report: Driver's license report (MVR) will be obtained by the HR division when applicable.

 

Education Requirement: Successful applicant must submit a copy of his/her high school diploma or GED before appointment.

 

Veteran's Preference Points: Veterans points will be awarded based on State guidelines. Must submit/upload DD-214 with application and before closing date in order to be awarded points. This is for initial appointments only.

 

Salary Range: Range 27 $1,134.25 to $1,549.91 (Biweekly Rate) (Typically hire at minimum) This position is eligible for benefits.
