POSITION SUMMARY

To make minor and major mechanical repairs to gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy and light construction and other power-driven equipment.  Receives general supervision from the Shop Supervisor.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING STANDARDS

Two years of journey level vehicle and equipment maintenance experience including the maintenance of both diesel and gas powered equipment.  Experience with heavy truck and heavy construction equipment is preferred.  Some welding experience is desired.  Training equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.  Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance including specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.  Possession of or ability to obtain within 180 Days a Utah State Class A CDL.  Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid inspection and Weber County emission testing license from the State of Utah.  Must have a complete set of hand tools including inch driver with both SAE and metric; tools must be stored in a roll away adequate to provide mobility and security within and out of the shop.

 

NIMS REQUIRED TRAINING

Employee will be required to complete NIMS IS100 and IS700 within three months of hire.

 

Failure to obtain/maintain license and certificate as outlined above will result in termination from the position.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

   Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, values and expectations
   Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment.

   Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical systems components, ignition systems, computers, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters and batteries.
   Diagnose, maintain, repair and recondition hydraulic systems and high pressure water systems, including pumps, valves, rams, hoses and motors.
   Diagnose, maintain, and repair high pressure air systems, including rebuilding pumps, valves, cylinders and hoses.
   Diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, chain drives and propeller shafts.
   Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
   Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
   Tune up engines by replacing ignition parts and reconditioning and adjusting carburetors, throttle body and port fuel injection systems and propane fuel systems.
   Repair and replace components such as generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, and high voltage light systems
   Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, hydraulic and air brakes.
   Repair chain saws, weed eaters, trimmers, blowers, edgers, and pressure washers.
   Maintain and repair shop equipment including hoists, grinders, welders, compressors, steam cleaners, and presses.
   Maintain work, time, and material records.
Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.  Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employee is required to use on-site equipment.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.  
 

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
Pull parts for repair.
Coordinate repairs with outside contractors.
May perform welder functions.
 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, skills, abilities:

Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
Procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive, heavy and light construction equipment.
Principles and procedures of hydraulic systems, high pressure air systems, and high pressure water systems.
Operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of automotive, light and heavy equipment used in city government.
Operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Perform journey level equipment mechanical work including the diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
Operate a variety of equipment maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations, communicating with others, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles as required by the position.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Walking or standing for extended periods of time and operating assigned equipment
Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations, including safety and risk management standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work in a shop environment.  Lifting, climbing and stooping.  Exposures to dust, grease, and noise.  May be required to perform emergency repairs under adverse weather conditions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to lift and or move up to 20 lbs.

SALARY RANGE

Range 35 - $1,381.97 to $1,888.42 (Bi-weekly Rate) (DOQ).  This position is eligible for benefits.
